Substack as a Subversive Art
Sit in on my class covering Amos Vogel and Cinema 16
Thanks to my good friend Jason Del Gandio for letting me take over his class on Countercultural Communication at Temple University in February of this year. I was honored to step in and share a lesson on one of my favorite subjects:
Amos Vogel, Cinema 16, and Film as a Subversive Art.
For a bit of context on this lecture, Dr. Del Gandio’s class had been studying the history of counter-cultural art movements like the Futurists, Dada-ists, and Surrealists. They had also recently viewed and discussed the 2018 Boots Riley film Sorry To Bother You (as I’m currently in a mode of ecstatic anticipation for Riley’s latest I Love Boosters I thought the time for posting this lecture seemed right). This is the third iteration of this lecture I’ve done for the course, and I want to thank Jason and his students for their enthusiasm and insight. What a fantastic engagement—be sure to stay tuned for their great questions at the end.
And, for further context, this is the picture Jason D showed his class while introducing me just before the recording of this video:
Dada is dead! Long live Dada!
Also: please check out Jason’s work at jasondelgandio.com. I’m particularly excited about his forthcoming book Vibe Talk, which you can pre-order here.
Ok, here’s the lecture. Feel free to enter your Q&A questions in the comment section below and I’ll definitely get back to you. Also, if you’re someone who would like to commission me to give a lecture or takeover your class to speak about subversive cinema or any number of cinema or performance studies topics, please leave a message in the comments.
Happy summer, ESN readers!
I am going to be changing things up this summer in order to allow for some creative writing time. ECSTATIC Screen Notes will still publish twice monthly, but it will be an array of older writings that are new to this site. I may even post some writing that veers outside the realm of what I normally do here—scripts, poetry, or more video, perhaps?—so you’ll have to stay tuned all summer to ESN to find out.
And thank you again for all your support, ESN readers! Keep spreading the good words and remember to look up.
